| Cordyceps is a Chinese mushroom used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for “lung protection” and “reproductive invigoration” as well as to balance the “Qi” – the fundamental “energy of life.” Cordyceps is also known as the Chinese caterpillar fungus (yuck!) because it is a parasitic organism that grows on a rare Tibetan caterpillar until the caterpillar dies and the mushroom sprouts from the caterpillar’s head (double yuck!!). Luckily, the source of cordyceps used in most modern supplements is not pulverized caterpillar heads, but a strain grown on soybeans or other less disgusting nutrient source. |

Antiasthmatic activity
Infusion of Dongcong Xiacao has shown antiasthmatic effect by enlarging the smooth muscle of branchis of animals, and inhibitory action on intestinal canal, uterus and heart.
No obvious effect on blood vessel
Hypotensive effect has been exhibited at intravenous injection, but not at celiac and intramuscular injection.
Sedative and hypnotic effect on mice with low toxicity

Ethanol extraction liquid of Dongcong Xiacao has demonstrated potent inhibitory activity against mryobacterium tuberculosis H37RV, the water decoction displayed certain inhibitory activity against plococcus pneumoniae and some pathogenic epiphyte. Cordycepin has inhibited in vitro growth of streptococcus, malleomyces mallei, bacillus anthracis, hemorrhagic septicemic bacillus of pig, staphylococcus.
Dongcong Xiacao has been reported to possess sedative, anti-inflammatory activities, and properties of reducing serum cholesterol, increasing blood sugar, enlarging in vitro bronchia and stimulating in vitro ileum. Besides, it has been stated to enhance the engulfing activity of celiac macrophage, inhibit the reject reaction of T lyphocyte, prevent and inhibit carcinoma |

| 7% cordycepic acid (D-Mannitol〔69-65-8〕, C7H12O6, is 1, 3, 4, 5-tetrahydroxyl cycloacid), 25% protein, 8.4% fat. Other constituents include cordycepin (adenosine, 3′-deoxy-〔73-03-0〕, C10H13N5O3, molecular weight 251.24, needle crystalline（ethanol, n-butanol, n-propanol or water）, melting point 225～226°; melting point 230～231°) , 18 amino acids, ergosterin, peroxide, cholesterol, palmitic acid, stearic acid, adenine, nucleotide, uracil and dozens of microelements. |
