Lutein is a natural pigment of the carotenoid family. It is widely found in nature, mainly in vegetables and fruits. In the human body, Lutein is found in tissues such as liver, pancreas, ovaries, and testicles and in the macula, lens and retina of the eye. Just like other carotenoid, lutein acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells against the damaging effects of free radicals and/or as a filter in light sensitive tissues such as the eye macula, lens and retina. Unlike ß-Carotene, lutein is not a Vitamin A precursor.
It is increasingly recognized as a key factor in maintaining the health of the macula, an area in the back of the eye's retina that creates the sharpest vision. Free radical damage from sunlight and other environmental factors generally results in the onset of Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
Lutein is not made in the human body and has to be obtained from food (preferably spinach, kale, collard, broccoli, and peas). Nowadays, Lutein is becoming an increasingly popular active ingredient used in the nutritional supplements industry. |
