Rosemary Oil: The Science Behind Its Potential Benefits for Hair Growth

2025-03-27

Rosemary oil has garnered attention as a natural remedy for improving hair health and promoting growth. While some claim it rivals commercial hair growth products like Rogaine (minoxidil), scientific studies have begun shedding light on its actual effectiveness. Here’s what research reveals about rosemary oil’s ability to regrow hair, prevent thinning, and strengthen the scalp—and how to use it safely for optimal results.

What the Research Says About Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil is extracted from the leaves and flowers of the Rosmarinus officinalis plant and has long been used for medicinal purposes. A 2024 study polling 407 individuals revealed that nearly half had used rosemary for a health-related purpose, with 82% choosing it specifically to improve hair health.

Rosemary oil functions as a vasodilator, which increases blood circulation and can stimulate hair follicles, improving scalp health and promoting thicker, stronger hair. Researchers propose rosemary oil may enhance the attachment of strands to the scalp and strengthen the shaft.

Does Rosemary Oil Treat Hair Loss?

A notable 2015 study found that rosemary oil may effectively treat androgenic alopecia, a common hormone-related type of hair loss. The study showed rosemary oil therapy produced results comparable to minoxidil 2% after six months of application. Researchers believe rosemary oil works by blocking a form of testosterone responsible for shrinking hair follicles and triggering hair loss.

Similarly, a 2022 study on rats tested rosemary oil blended into vegetable oil gels (oleogels) against minoxidil 2%. The results showed the rosemary oleogel had hair growth effects similar to minoxidil after six weeks of treatment. Although promising, more large-scale studies on humans are needed to confirm these findings.

Can Rosemary Oil Prevent Premature Graying?

There is some evidence that rosemary oil may help prevent early graying of hair, although existing research is limited. Additional studies will be needed to establish whether rosemary oil truly impacts hair color.

Other Hair and Scalp Benefits

Beyond its potential to promote hair growth, rosemary oil may help with other hair concerns:

- Dandruff: A 2022 review identified essential oils, including rosemary, as promising anti-dandruff solutions. Rosemary oil may also reduce scalp inflammation associated with the condition.

- Hair Damage: Rosemary oil can be used to improve texture, moisture retention, shine, and resilience to heat damage. Regular use with carrier oils may help combat dry hair, split ends, frizz, and dullness.

How to Use Rosemary Oil Safely

Rosemary oil must be diluted with a carrier oil, such as olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil, before application to the scalp or hair. Undiluted rosemary oil can cause irritation.

Here are safe ways to use rosemary oil:

1. Add 2-3 drops to a single portion of shampoo or conditioner before applying to your hair.

2. Create your own rosemary oil recipes at home by mixing essential oil with carrier oil.

3. Massage diluted oil directly onto your scalp, leaving it in for a few minutes or overnight before rinsing.

4. Follow guidelines from the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, which recommends no more than 20 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.

Nutrition, genetic predisposition, or underlying conditions like anemia or chemotherapy-related hair loss should be addressed first, as rosemary oil’s efficacy may depend on the cause of hair concerns.

Other Uses of Rosemary Oil

Rosemary oil has applications beyond hair care. It has been reported to support skin health, wound healing, memory, stress relief, joint pain management, and digestive health. However, individuals taking medications, such as blood thinners or treatments for high blood pressure, should consult a healthcare provider before use to avoid interactions or side effects like allergic reactions or skin irritation.

Conclusion

Rosemary oil is emerging as a natural option for promoting hair growth, preventing hair loss, minimizing dandruff, and possibly even delaying premature graying. Studies indicate it might even rival commercial products like minoxidil. When applying rosemary oil, dilution with a carrier oil is key to avoiding irritation, and seeking guidance from healthcare professionals is recommended if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, dealing with certain medical conditions, or using specific medications. While more studies are needed, rosemary oil’s potential benefits make it an intriguing addition to holistic hair care routines.
