Benadryl Recall: 2,300 Bottles Pulled Due to Unsafe Packaging

2025-03-27

Parents and caregivers are urged to check their medicine cabinets as a recall has been issued for 2,300 bottles of Benadryl Liquid Elixir 100 ml. Arsell Inc. announced the recall on Thursday, following reports that the product packaging is not child-safe, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The recall stems from a violation of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act, which mandates that products containing certain drugs, including diphenhydramine—the active ingredient in Benadryl—must be packaged in child-resistant containers. So far, there have been no reported incidents of children being harmed by the recalled product.

Details of the Recalled Product

The affected bottles were sold on Amazon.com between July 2023 and October 2024, priced between $16 and $19. The recalled Benadryl Liquid Elixir comes in a rounded dark plastic bottle adorned with a pink and white label and the word “Benadryl” written in blue text. The bottle contains 100 ml of liquid and is sold in a box with a white label on the bottom, marked with the code X003VRIGUL.

What Consumers Should Do

If you have one of the recalled bottles, it is critical to dispose of it. Although the medicine itself is not affected, the unsafe packaging poses a risk. To receive a refund, submit your Amazon order number and a photo confirming that you discarded the product to recall

The recall notice emphasized, “Only the bottle is being recalled, not the medicine itself, but both should be disposed of.” While the issue lies solely with the packaging, removing the product from your home is recommended to ensure safety.

Why This Recall Matters

Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, is an antihistamine used to treat allergies, cold symptoms, or sleep issues. Within normal doses, the medication is generally safe. However, if a child accesses the recalled bottle due to its faulty packaging, they could potentially consume more than the safe dose, resulting in serious side effects or harm.

Though no injuries have been reported from the recalled product, parents and caregivers should err on the side of caution and consult healthcare professionals if they have concerns about their child’s exposure to the medicine or symptoms following its use.

Stay Safe and Act Quickly

To protect your household, confirm whether you own the recalled Benadryl Liquid Elixir and remove it immediately. Follow the instructions provided by Arsell Inc. for refunds and remain vigilant about ensuring that all over-the-counter medications in your home are securely packaged and stored out of reach of children.

This recall serves as an important reminder to regularly check medicine cabinets and adhere to safety protocols when it comes to over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
